The 369 Infantry Regiment

The 369th Infantry Regiment was composed of African American soldiers. It was one of the first Regiment to land in France. It was formerly known as the 15th New York National Guard Regiment, and their nickname: “the Harlem Hellfighters”.


The 369th US Infantry Regiment was assigned by General Pershing to the 16th French Division and fought with the French Adrian helmet and rifle.


They fought 191 days, more than all other US units. They were the first Allied unit to reach the Rhine River.



171 men and officers were awarded the Military Cross or the French Legion of Honor for heroism in action.
